As humanity assumes god-like creative powers with AI, this ancient wisdom serves as a potent reminder of the perils of forgetting our limitations.

Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, in a prescient observation that resonates deeply with our current predicament, reminded us that "we live at a time when man believes himself fabulously capable of creation, but he does not know what to create. This calls for a constant vigilance to ensure that technological advancements do not inadvertently diminish our inherent worth or autonomy.

Emphasizing the urgent need to establish standards of ethical discernment rooted in the dignity of the individual, His Holiness has warned against the "illusion of self-assertion"—the dangerous belief that humanity can unilaterally dictate its future without moral grounding. Viewed through the framework of core human values anchored in the dignity of man, global leaders are increasingly called upon to opt for a "humanist centric" approach in the deployment and regulation of AI. This approach places the individual at the center of all decisions, prioritizing the larger good of humanity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a leading voice on this issue, has stressed at both the VivaTech 2026 conference in Paris (June 2026) and the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi (February 2026) that such an approach necessitates a robust and enforceable regulatory framework, rather than relying solely on voluntary and non-binding commitments.

Such a framework, he argues, is crucial not only for mitigating risks but also for democratizing access to frontier AI technologies. It aims to build a shared, trustworthy AI ecosystem in an age that, as some observers lament, "levels everything and reveres nothing." The Prime Minister’s emphasis on legally binding regulations reflects a growing global consensus that self-regulation by tech giants is insufficient to address the systemic risks posed by AI.

The Path Forward: Ethical AI Governance for a Human Future

The epochal challenge of Artificial Intelligence demands a level of political leadership and international cooperation unprecedented in human history.
