"Our group that meets every Sunday hopes to be inclusive, practice, have fun, and indulge in a new hobby."

Here, a diverse group of approximately 20 skateboarders, predominantly between the ages of 18 and 25, converge to hone their skills. The community proudly boasts a healthy representation of women, who actively reach out to inquire about joining sessions. The prevailing method of skill acquisition within the group involves a deep dive into the vast ocean of YouTube tutorials, followed by practical application during their weekly meetups. "About 90% of the people who board are Gen-Z college kids," Jacob notes, highlighting the youthful energy driving this urban subculture.

Despite the growing enthusiasm, Jacob acknowledges that skateboarding in Chennai is still in its nascent stages. He observes that while students may represent Tamil Nadu in competitions, many eventually drift away from the sport as they navigate the traditional pathways toward adult occupations. "Most people outside of Tamil Nadu do not know about the skateboarding culture here," Jacob states, underscoring the importance of such events for visibility. His recent visit to Bengaluru in April, where he met with representatives from Sphere Skateboards, revealed their keen interest in understanding the dynamics of the Chennai scene. The organizers anticipate around 30 skaters participating in the jam, with invitations extended to other local clubs to showcase their unique styles and techniques.
The "GOTY Jam" is designed to be an engaging and accessible event, featuring two primary trick categories. The first is the fundamental "ollie," a foundational trick that, despite its apparent simplicity, presents a significant learning curve for beginners. Jacob emphasizes, "It is not as easy as it looks." The second category is the "game of skate," a more dynamic and interactive trick-off that incorporates elements of chance and playful banter, akin to a skateboarding version of rock-paper-scissors.
