Chennai’s sporting landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, with the vibrant, fast-paced game of pickleball rapidly transforming from a niche curiosity into a bona fide city-wide obsession. Once relegated to the shadows of more established sports, pickleball is now commanding prime court time, attracting a diverse and ever-growing legion of enthusiasts. From actors integrating it into their daily routines to nascent sports academies and even real estate developers incorporating dedicated courts, the city is enthusiastically embracing this dynamic sport.
The Surge of the Paddle: A Sport Finds its Footing
The remarkable ascent of pickleball in Chennai is a testament to its inherent accessibility and engaging nature. Actor Amitash, a lifelong sports enthusiast, exemplifies this burgeoning trend. His personal schedule is now meticulously arranged around his evening pickleball sessions. "Three to four days a week, I get together with a large group to play, and we have at least one court booked in advance for the month," he shares. "I much prefer getting my cardio outdoors, and through a sport which pickleball has made possible."
Amitash’s sentiment is echoed across the city. What was once a modest gathering of players has blossomed into a vibrant community. "We have over 10 great courts to pick from, and clubs in the city have been generous enough to add a pickleball court," Amitash observes. "The community might be small compared to cricket, but the tournaments are amazing, even for a spectator." His commitment has even led to an endorsement deal with a pickleball gear manufacturer, underscoring the sport’s growing commercial viability.
The digital realm further highlights this surge. A quick check on the Turf Town app reveals at least 15 pickleball courts readily available in Chennai. While the sport has experienced a steady following post-pandemic, the last year has witnessed an unprecedented embrace of pickleball by the city.
A Court for Every Corner: Infrastructure Catches Up
The proliferation of pickleball courts is a direct response to the surging demand. Chennai now boasts a diverse array of playing venues, catering to various preferences. Players can choose from courts located within popular malls like Ice Water Sports Arena in Express Avenue and DoubleDribble at Ampa Skywalk, dedicated sporting facilities such as Huddle Up in Mahalingapuram and Pickleball Park in T. Nagar, and sports hubs like K Square Sports Hub in Tiruvottiyur. Even exclusive recreational clubs like the Madras Club and Presidency Club have recognized the trend and incorporated pickleball facilities.
The allure of pickleball has even permeated the real estate sector. Baashyaam Constructions recently advertised an upcoming residential project in the city that will feature a dedicated pickleball court, signaling its appeal as a lifestyle amenity. In a significant development for the pickleball fraternity, actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu was named the owner of the Chennai franchise of the World Pickleball League (WBPL) earlier this year, further elevating the sport’s profile.
From Niche to Numbers: Quantifying the Growth
The tangible growth of pickleball is evident in the statistics provided by the Tamil Nadu Pickleball Association. Dr. Kavya Somesh, a board member, predicts, "We estimate that the city will have five to 10 more courts in the next couple of months." This optimistic outlook is backed by compelling data. The association’s first state tournament a few years ago saw a modest participation of around 20 individuals. This year’s tournament, however, attracted nearly 300 players. "This year was the first time we also opened up an under-10 category because of how the sport has picked up even among children," Dr. Somesh adds.
A Look Back: The Genesis of Chennai’s Pickleball Scene
The journey of pickleball in Chennai hasn’t been without its challenges. Early adopters recall a time when dedicated courts were a distant dream. Rohit Ahuja, a pioneering player and co-founder of the Chennai Talents’ Pickleball Academy, reminisces about the early days. "Through the newly-started Chennai Talents’ Pickleball Academy, which he founded along with Vimal Raj Jayachandran, Rohit says they have been coaching players of all age groups at DoubleDribble sports complex’s pickleball court at Ampa Skywalk mall. "We have seen a steady surge in the number of people who want to be coached, and with newer venues coming up, we plan to expand our operations," says Rohit, who recently bagged a medal in the mixed doubles and men’s doubles categories at the Bangalore Masters pickleball tournament."
Paddle Up: Adapting Existing Facilities
The adaptability of pickleball has facilitated its integration into existing sporting infrastructure. At GUTS in Egmore, one of its three badminton courts is slated for conversion into a dedicated pickleball space. "The height of the net has to be reduced to three feet and with a few other minor infrastructural changes, we will be good to go," says Kishore Raj, a senior staff member. This signifies a low barrier to entry for venues looking to accommodate the sport.
Ganesh Kumar, who now runs K Square Sports Hub in Tiruvottiyur with two dedicated outdoor pickleball courts, also began his pickleball journey in a makeshift setting. "When Ganesh Kumar started playing the sport a few years ago, he recalls the volleyball court of a school being the only available space. ‘We would measure and draw lines with chalk, and then play,’ he says." He observes that the current players are predominantly between the ages of 20 and 40, with a significant number transitioning from badminton.

The Anatomy of Pickleball: A Hybrid Sport for All
Pickleball, often described as a blend of badminton, table tennis, and tennis, offers a unique and engaging gameplay experience. Conceived in the United States in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum as a family-friendly game, it has since captivated the globe. The sport is played on a court measuring 20 feet by 44 feet, with players using paddles to strike a ball over a net that stands three feet high.
In India, Sunil Valawalkar is credited with introducing the sport, bringing paddles and balls back from Canada. He founded the All India Pickleball Association in 2008, which now boasts over 3,000 registered players across 16 states.
The Allure of Accessibility and Community
A significant draw of pickleball is its inherent accessibility across all age groups and fitness levels. This inclusivity has been a driving force behind the increasing number of facilities being established. Mahalingam Subramanian, owner of Huddle Up in Mahalingapuram, which recently opened with a rooftop football turf and a pickleball court, notes a consistent stream of regulars who use the sport for cardio. However, he acknowledges the long road ahead for pickleball to match the popularity of badminton. "While pickleball has around 1,500 people in the city who play regularly, I estimate badminton has over 60,000," he states.
Mall Mania: Pickleball Takes Center Stage
Shopping malls are increasingly becoming hubs for pickleball, recognizing its appeal as an engaging activity. The Ice Water Sports Arena at Express Avenue Mall, featuring three pickleball courts, hosts at least two tournaments weekly. "EA wanted to be a pioneer in promoting this sport, and the demand for the courts has increased exponentially over the last eight months since the launch," says Sumathy Mohan, chief financial officer. "Experiencing the overwhelming enthusiasm of the players, the mall plans to increase the number of courts to support pickleball further."
Indoor vs. Outdoor: Navigating the Playing Field
As pickleball courts proliferate, discussions arise regarding the optimal playing environment. Rohit Ahuja emphasizes the benefits of outdoor play, citing potential challenges with indoor surfaces and the absence of wind. He also notes the need for different types of balls for indoor and outdoor play. However, he quickly adds that the sport’s burgeoning journey means such distinctions are not a significant impediment in its early stages. "Play anywhere, and there is so much the sport has to offer, including the sense of community and interaction that one can enjoy," he advocates.

The camaraderie and enthusiasm are palpable during a typical evening at the Ice Water Sports Arena, with spirited games unfolding across its three courts. The player demographic is diverse, ranging from young individuals receiving coaching to seasoned players engaged in intense volleys.
Beyond the Pastime: Pickleball as a Serious Sport
The ongoing debate surrounding pickleball – whether it’s merely a pastime for seniors or a legitimate form of exercise – is being actively addressed by the sport’s growing community. Rohit argues, "A singles game is quite draining, and pickleball as such requires a lot of skill and strategy." Kevin Patel, a regular organizer of pickleball tournaments in the city, asserts that the sport offers something for everyone. "There is no limit for a player here to keep getting better. It is challenging, and equally fun, something we have all been coming back to repeatedly," he concludes, highlighting the enduring charm of pickleball for its expanding fanbase in Chennai.
