Chennai, India – May 21, 2026 – A vibrant and rapidly growing skateboarding community is taking root in Chennai, fueled by a passion for the sport and a commitment to inclusivity. Spearheaded by dedicated individuals like Jacob Dan Paul, the Chennai Skateboarding Community is fostering an environment where enthusiasts of all skill levels can connect, practice, and celebrate their shared love for gliding on four wheels. This burgeoning scene is set to take center stage with the upcoming "Greatest Trick Of The Year" (GOTY) Jam, an event designed to showcase local talent and further elevate Chennai’s skateboarding culture.
The Genesis of a Community: More Than Just Tricks
The Chennai Skateboarding Community, initiated by Jacob Dan Paul, was born from a desire to create a welcoming space for skateboarders. Back in 2016, Paul, who discovered his passion for skateboarding through his background as a dancer, found that the sport offered a unique blend of athleticism and artistry. However, he also observed the potential for pressure and exclusion within the skateboarding world, particularly for newcomers.
"Many young people who skateboard tend to take on the pressure that a sense of competition imposes," explains Paul. "Our group, which meets every Sunday, hopes to be inclusive, practice, have fun, and indulge in a new hobby." This core philosophy of inclusivity is what sets the Chennai Skateboarding Community apart. It’s not just about mastering complex tricks; it’s about building a supportive network where individuals can learn, grow, and enjoy the freedom of movement that skateboarding offers.
A Sunday Ritual: The Thiruvanmiyur Hub
Every Sunday, the park beneath the Thiruvanmiyur railway station transforms into a dynamic hub for Chennai’s skateboarders. Typically, around 20 individuals, predominantly between the ages of 18 and 25, gather to hone their skills and share their passion. The demographic is overwhelmingly composed of Gen-Z college students, a testament to the sport’s growing appeal among younger generations.
The community’s learning process is largely self-driven, with members avidly consuming YouTube tutorials to learn new tricks and techniques. They then bring this knowledge to their Sunday meetups, experimenting and refining their abilities in a supportive atmosphere. Notably, the community boasts a healthy representation of women, who actively reach out and express their interest in joining the sessions, further underscoring the group’s commitment to diversity and accessibility.

"About 90% of the people who board are Gen-Z college kids," Paul observes. This demographic is drawn to skateboarding not only for its physical challenge but also for its inherent coolness and self-expression. The community provides them with a platform to channel their energy, creativity, and desire for connection outside of their academic pursuits.
Skateboarding in Chennai: A Nascent but Promising Landscape
Despite the growing enthusiasm, skateboarding in Chennai is still in its early stages of development. While students have represented Tamil Nadu in national competitions, many tend to transition away from the sport as they pursue more conventional career paths. This often leads to a loss of talent and passion, as the demanding journey towards adult occupations eclipses the simple joys of skateboarding.
Jacob Dan Paul’s personal journey exemplifies the potential of pursuing skateboarding beyond a casual hobby. His background as a dancer provided him with a natural advantage, allowing him to pick up the sport with relative ease. He chose to nurture this passion, and it has since blossomed into a fulfilling career. Today, he is not only a coach but also a competitor, dedicating his time to skateboarding full-time after years of working in retail. He is now at the forefront of cultivating this "cool culture" within the city.
"Skateboarding is still at a nascent stage in the city," Paul acknowledges. However, his dedication and the collective efforts of the Chennai Skateboarding Community are actively working to change this narrative, laying the groundwork for a more established and recognized skateboarding scene.
The "GOTY Jam": A Showcase of Local Talent and Community Spirit
To further galvanize the skateboarding scene and put Chennai on the map, Jacob Dan Paul has partnered with Sphere Skateboards, a brand hailing from Bengaluru, for the upcoming "Greatest Trick Of The Year" (GOTY) Jam. The event is scheduled to take place on May 24th, commencing at 3 pm, at the familiar park below the Thiruvanmiyur railway station.

This collaboration stems from Paul’s recent visit to Bengaluru in April, where he met with representatives from Sphere Skateboards. The brand, keen to understand and support the skateboarding culture in Chennai, readily agreed to partner for the event. "Most people outside of Tamil Nadu do not know about the skateboarding culture here," Paul states. "When I visited Bengaluru in April, we set up a meeting with the Sphere guys who seemed keen on seeing what the scene here is like."
The GOTY Jam is anticipated to draw around 30 skaters, with Paul actively extending invitations to other skateboarding clubs to participate and showcase their unique styles. This inclusive approach aims to foster a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition among different groups within the city.
What to Expect at the GOTY Jam: Skills, Shenanigans, and Style
The GOTY Jam promises an exciting display of skateboarding prowess, featuring two primary trick categories. The first will highlight the ollie, a fundamental trick that serves as the gateway for many aspiring skateboarders. Paul emphasizes that despite its apparent simplicity, mastering the ollie requires dedication and practice.
The second, and perhaps most engaging, segment will be the "Game of Skate." This dynamic trick-off involves a series of challenges where skaters attempt to replicate each other’s tricks. The format incorporates elements of chance and playful banter, reminiscent of playground games. "The game of skate: a trick-off involving some rock-paper-scissors and other shenanigans," Paul describes, hinting at the fun and lighthearted nature of this competition.
Beyond the thrilling performances, attendees can expect to receive complimentary t-shirts and explore an array of interesting merchandise. In the skateboarding community, as Paul aptly puts it, "style in this community is currency," and the GOTY Jam will undoubtedly be a testament to the unique fashion and aesthetic that often accompanies the sport.

Looking Ahead: Chennai’s Skateboarding Ambitions
While acknowledging Bengaluru’s current status as the "skateboarding capital," Jacob Dan Paul expresses optimism about Chennai’s trajectory. His primary focus remains on fostering connections and encouraging new individuals to embrace the sport.
"Today, Bengaluru is the skateboarding capital. Chennai does not have to get there but I am excited to meet new people who’d like to try new things," he shares. "Honestly, it is among the chillest ways to blow off some steam." This sentiment encapsulates the essence of the Chennai Skateboarding Community – a space for stress relief, personal growth, and the sheer joy of movement.
The GOTY Jam on May 24th is more than just an event; it’s a milestone in the journey of Chennai’s skateboarding community. It represents a collective effort to build a stronger, more visible, and more inclusive skateboarding culture, one trick at a time. As the word spreads and more individuals are drawn to the allure of the wheeled board, Chennai is steadily carving its own niche in the ever-evolving landscape of action sports.
