Bengaluru, India – A palpable buzz of nervous energy is electrifying the air as the Ultrahuman Hyrox Bengaluru race looms this weekend (April 11-12) at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. Among the eager participants is Raj Ganpath, a seasoned fitness and nutrition coach and co-founder of Chennai’s The Quad fitness centre. For Ganpath, it’s a maiden voyage into the world of Hyrox, a global fitness racing series that has rapidly captured the imagination of athletes and fitness enthusiasts across India.

The numbers speak volumes about Hyrox’s burgeoning popularity. Mumbai played host to an inaugural event with 1,650 athletes, followed by Delhi with a staggering 2,200 participants last year. Anticipation for a subsequent Mumbai event in September 2025 is already sky-high, with projections of 3,350 athletes. Bengaluru, however, is set to shatter all previous records, scaling up to an impressive 8,200 participants for its upcoming race. This surge underscores Hyrox’s remarkable trajectory in the Indian fitness landscape.

The Genesis of a Global Fitness Force

Launched in Germany in 2017 by race organizer Christian Toetzke and Olympian Moritz Fürste, Hyrox was conceived with a singular vision: to create a universally accessible fitness race built on the fundamental principles of athletic performance. Its core philosophy emphasizes inclusivity, catering to a wide spectrum of age groups and fitness levels. This commitment to accessibility is reflected in its diverse race formats, including singles, doubles, and relay options, allowing individuals of varying abilities to participate. Today, Hyrox has transcended borders, boasting over 80 events across 25 countries and engaging more than 250,000 participants worldwide.

India officially joined this global circuit on October 17, 2024, marking its entry as the seventh Asia-Pacific market. The nation’s inaugural Hyrox race took place in Mumbai in May of the previous year, setting the stage for a nationwide expansion. Bengaluru now stands as the second major stop on this burgeoning Indian tour, with Delhi slated for a July event (for which registrations are already open) and a return to Mumbai in September, solidifying Hyrox’s commitment to establishing a strong presence across key Indian metropolises.

Filling the Competitive Gap: The Hyrox Advantage

Deepak Raj, founder and CEO of Yoska, and the country head for Hyrox India and Ironman India, articulates the unique position Hyrox occupies in the Indian fitness ecosystem. "Gym-goers don’t have a race – this fills the gap," he explains. The inherent appeal of Hyrox lies in its dual strengths: accessibility and year-round viability as an indoor event. "Hyrox is for everybody; for all forms, and builds endurance and strength," Raj emphasizes. The availability of team formats like doubles and relays further amplifies its inclusivity, allowing friends, family, and colleagues to compete together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared achievement.

The Allure of the Hyrox Format: A Fusion of Endurance and Strength

For individuals like Raj Ganpath, the allure of Hyrox lies in its meticulously crafted race structure. "If you look at the overall circuit, it’s heavily endurance-based, but there’s a significant strength component as well," he notes. This balanced approach distinguishes Hyrox from more specialized endurance or strength-focused disciplines. Ganpath, who is competing in the Pro Doubles category, has dedicated the last three and a half months to rigorous preparation. His training regimen primarily involves simulations that meticulously mirror race conditions, alternating between one-kilometer runs and functional strength stations. The limited availability of dedicated Hyrox-style setups in cities like Chennai means that many athletes, including Ganpath, have had to adapt, utilizing facilities like Momentum Studio for their training.

As the Bengaluru event draws nearer, Ganpath’s focus has shifted to the crucial phase of tapering. "You want to taper down and make sure you show up on race day feeling fresh and recovered," he advises. The strategy involves reducing training volume without complete cessation to prevent deconditioning. "The emphasis is on reducing load while staying active – just enough to keep the body primed and the central nervous system engaged."

The journey leading up to the race has been profoundly rewarding for Ganpath. "To be very honest, for me, Hyrox is already done; I’ve gotten everything I needed out of the training," he reflects. "My endurance has improved, my strength has improved, and my nutrition has become more streamlined." This testament highlights the holistic benefits of preparing for a Hyrox event, extending far beyond mere race day performance.

A Global Trend Manifested in India

Kunal Rajput, a Mumbai-based Nike Training coach, observes that the rapid rise of Hyrox in India is a natural progression, mirroring its adoption in earlier markets. "In places like Singapore and other parts of the world, the fitness community was really excited, and it became a thing because everybody wanted to participate," he states. He recalls that these markets were already hosting multi-day Hyrox events just a couple of years ago.

This burgeoning enthusiasm has spurred the development of a robust supporting ecosystem. Rajput points out that gyms and training centers looking to align with Hyrox, through affiliation or specialized programming, invest in annual fees ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹60,000. This signifies a growing structured training infrastructure coalescing around the Hyrox format.

Rajput distinguishes between participation and competition within the Hyrox community. While a substantial number of individuals engage in the races, a distinct segment comprises true competitors. For many, the primary draw is the experiential aspect. "People are signing up to try it out, to do it with their partners, with a group of friends, even for the social aspect of it," he observes. He also notes an element of "social clout" and visibility that attracts certain participants.

The power of shared effort is a significant hook. Rajput himself participated in the Bangkok Hyrox in March, marking his sixth race. He emphasizes how the format organically fosters connection, whether among friends, family, or even strangers sharing the same course. "It’s a lovely event in that sense – people come together, push through it side by side, and that makes the whole thing far more enjoyable."

The Critical Role of Nutrition and Recovery

Bengaluru-based fitness trainer Shwetambari Shetty, who clinched a podium finish in the Women’s Pro Doubles at the inaugural Mumbai event, qualifying her for the World Championships in Sweden, underscores the paramount importance of nutrition and recovery. Having also participated in a race in Bangkok, partly for the experience and as a community outing with 20 members from her gym, Thirdspace, Shetty highlights Hyrox’s growing appeal due to its accessibility in urban centers.

"If you’re already someone who goes to the gym – lifting weights and doing some cardio – it’s not an impossible leap," she asserts. The primary adjustment for many is the running component, which constitutes approximately eight kilometers in total and can be built up over a few months.

She emphasizes that while training builds the foundation, "nutrition and recovery determine how well that training translates on race day." Unlike disciplines heavily focused on strength, endurance events like Hyrox demand a distinct fuelling strategy. Carbohydrate loading is central to this strategy. Shetty recommends consuming approximately five grams of carbohydrates per kilogram of body weight early in the week, increasing to seven to eight grams per kilogram in the two days preceding the race to maximize glycogen stores.

Race-day fuelling requires meticulous planning. Shetty advises practicing with energy gels during training, suggesting an initial gel 15 to 20 minutes before the race, followed by smaller doses every 20 to 30 minutes. Beyond energy replenishment, managing fatigue-related issues like cramping is crucial. Solutions like salt tablets, electrolyte mixes, or even pickle juice-based concoctions, commonly employed in endurance sports, can be effective.

Preparation, however, extends beyond diet and training. Even clothing choice can impact performance. "If you’re carrying gels or snacks, you need functional clothing with pockets," Shetty advises, recounting instances of discomfort and injury due to improper gel storage.

Footwear Innovation: The Hyrox-Specific Advantage

The unique demands of Hyrox, bridging the gap between running and functional strength training, have also necessitated a rethink in footwear design. Shreya Sachdev, Puma India’s Head of Marketing and Strategic Initiatives, Footwear, explains, "There is running, but there’s also multiple forms of functional fitness. So regular training shoes don’t work, and typical running shoes aren’t fully optimized either."

This realization led to the development of Puma’s Hyrox-specific iteration within its Nitro line, a collaboration with Hyrox backed by extensive research. "We’re treating it as a distinct category," Sachdev states. "Just like you wouldn’t use a badminton shoe for cricket, you wouldn’t use a pure running shoe for Hyrox."

Traditional running shoes are engineered for forward motion, prioritizing energy return through responsive cushioning and propulsion technologies. "The key difference is stability and grip," Sachdev elaborates. "When you’re doing movements like wall balls, sled pushes or sled pulls, you need a grounded, stable base. You also need traction." The Hyrox-adapted Nitro models achieve this balance by integrating cushioning with enhanced lateral stability and superior outsole grip, enabling athletes to transition seamlessly between running intervals and strength stations without compromising performance. The distinctive pink colorway of the current drop is the official Hyrox edition for the season and is expected to make its debut at the Bengaluru race. Puma x Hyrox footwear ranges from ₹12,999 to ₹21,999.

Championing Inclusivity: The Adaptive Category

For Pune-based performance coach Veenita Johnson, Hyrox embodies both intensity and profound inclusivity. As one of the few Hyrox-certified female trainers in Maharashtra and a Hyrox India consultant, she currently guides a cohort of 16 trainees preparing for the Bengaluru race, with more individuals slated for Delhi and Mumbai.

Veenita’s personal journey is particularly inspiring. Living with bilateral peroneal neuropathy (foot drop) since 2020, a neurological condition affecting lower limb movement, she will be participating in the Adaptive category at the Bengaluru race. This category is specifically designed to accommodate athletes with diverse physical conditions, a testament to Hyrox’s commitment to inclusivity. She had previously competed in the doubles category in Mumbai.

In her case, Veenita will complete the full one-kilometer runs between stations, but may modify certain strength components. "For something like sled push or sled pull, which puts a lot of stress on the lower limbs, I may do a reduced distance – say 25 metres instead of 50," she explains. For exercises like wall balls, she has the option of using a plyometric box for added stability during squats. "You can choose whether to take that support or not – it’s flexible depending on your condition."

Crucially, Hyrox offers varying levels of participation within the adaptive category. "If there are too many modifications required, you can choose to participate out of the race, just for the experience," she adds, underscoring the flexible approach.

Her training regimen is demanding, incorporating additional mobility work, physiotherapy-led exercises, and focused strengthening to compensate for less functional muscle groups. "I have to spend extra hours building endurance and managing compensation patterns," she notes, having recently completed a 10-kilometer run as part of her preparation.

The burgeoning Hyrox community is also attracting brand partnerships. At the Bengaluru edition, The League, an exclusive dating app, will host an on-ground activation. A "League x Hyrox Cam" will capture athletes in action, reframing traits like consistency and resilience as desirable qualities. Invite-only access codes will encourage participants to extend connections digitally, fostering chemistry in a high-energy environment.

Navigating the Pricing Landscape

Raj Ganpath acknowledges that the pricing of Hyrox events can appear steep when compared to traditional road races. "If you compare it to something like a 10K or a half marathon, then yes, it does feel expensive," he admits, noting registration fees starting around ₹7,500 and extending upwards of ₹10,000 depending on the category. Even spectator passes are priced between ₹500 and ₹1,500.

However, he quickly clarifies that the comparison is not entirely equitable. "Here, you’re dealing with an indoor, controlled environment – air-conditioning, specialised equipment like sleds and ski ergs, plus judges and timing systems. Naturally, the cost of putting something like this together is much higher."

As Hyrox heads to Bengaluru, here’s why it is fast becoming a go-to for fitness enthusiasts

Ganpath views India as being in an early phase of Hyrox adoption. "We’re still at that stage where people are trying it out," he says. "And like anything new, the first set of participants are usually the ones willing to pay that premium." As the sport continues to grow and gain wider acceptance, the pricing structure may evolve, but for now, the premium reflects the comprehensive and high-quality experience Hyrox delivers. The ongoing expansion of Hyrox across India, from Bengaluru to Delhi and Mumbai, signifies a dynamic and exciting new chapter in the nation’s fitness journey.
