Bengaluru Gears Up for Explosive Event as Participation Skyrockets

The burgeoning fitness landscape of India is set to witness another landmark event this weekend with the Ultrahuman Hyrox Bengaluru race, scheduled to take place on April 11th and 12th at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. As participants gear up for this demanding yet inclusive fitness challenge, the numbers speak volumes about Hyrox’s rapidly expanding footprint across the nation. What began as a niche global phenomenon is now capturing the imagination of Indian fitness enthusiasts, with participation figures soaring exponentially. From Mumbai’s inaugural event hosting 1,650 athletes to Delhi’s impressive 2,200 participants last year, and a projected 3,350 athletes for a subsequent Mumbai event in September 2025, Bengaluru is set to be the largest Indian edition yet, with an astounding 8,200 participants registered.

This surge in interest is not an isolated incident but part of a global trend. Launched in Germany in 2017 by race organizer Christian Toetzke and Olympian Moritz Fürste, Hyrox has evolved into a worldwide fitness racing series. Its core philosophy is built on the fundamental principles of athletic performance, meticulously designed to be accessible to a broad spectrum of age groups and fitness levels. The race format encompasses various categories, including singles, doubles, and relay formats, and has now expanded to over 80 events across 25 countries, attracting more than 250,000 participants globally.

India officially joined this dynamic circuit on October 17, 2024, becoming the seventh Asia-Pacific market to embrace the Hyrox challenge. The nation’s first official race was held in Mumbai in May last year, a precursor to the current Bengaluru event. Following this, Delhi will host its edition in July, with registrations already open, and Mumbai is slated for another event in September, indicating a strategic rollout and a clear intent to cultivate a strong Hyrox community across major Indian cities.

The Hyrox Phenomenon: A Deeper Dive

The rapid ascent of Hyrox in India can be attributed to its unique proposition, effectively filling a void in the existing fitness ecosystem. Deepak Raj, founder and CEO of Yoska, and Country Head for Hyrox India and Ironman India, articulated this sentiment in a previous interview with The Hindu. He highlighted that "Gym-goers don’t have a race – this fills the gap. Hyrox’s USP is that it’s accessible, and can be held any time of the year because it is an indoor event. Hyrox is for everybody; for all forms, and builds endurance and strength. You can do the doubles or a relay that has four participants." This emphasis on inclusivity and adaptability is a cornerstone of Hyrox’s appeal.

The Draw of Hyrox: Endurance Meets Strength

For many, including fitness and nutrition coach Raj Ganpath, co-founder of The Quad in Chennai, the appeal lies in the race’s meticulously structured format. Ganpath, who is preparing for his first Hyrox event in Bengaluru, admits to a touch of nervous energy. "That nervous energy comes from the fact that this will be my first Hyrox event," he shares. His preparation has been rigorous, focusing on a blend of endurance and strength training. "If you look at the overall circuit, it’s heavily endurance-based, but there’s a significant strength component as well," he explains.

Competing in the Pro Doubles category, which involves heavier weights than the Open division, Ganpath has dedicated the last three-and-a-half months to intensive training. This has involved simulating race conditions by alternating one-kilometre runs with functional strength stations. While access to Hyrox-specific training setups remains limited in some cities, Ganpath has utilized facilities like Momentum Studio in MRC Nagar, Chennai, to replicate race-day demands.

As the Bengaluru race draws nearer, Ganpath’s focus has shifted to tapering, a crucial phase of his preparation. "You want to taper down and make sure you show up on race day feeling fresh and recovered," he states. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining activity without overexertion, "You also don’t want to take the entire week off, because then you risk feeling deconditioned." The aim is to keep the body primed and the central nervous system engaged, a delicate balance achieved through reduced load and consistent, albeit less intense, activity.

The journey itself, Ganpath notes, has been profoundly rewarding. "To be very honest, for me, Hyrox is already done; I’ve gotten everything I needed out of the training," he reflects. "My endurance has improved, my strength has improved, and my nutrition has become more streamlined." This sentiment underscores the holistic benefits of preparing for a Hyrox event, extending far beyond the race day itself.

A Global Trajectory: India’s Rapid Integration

The growth of Hyrox in India mirrors its trajectory in other global markets. Mumbai-based Nike Training coach Kunal Rajput observes this phenomenon, drawing parallels with early-adopter regions. "In places like Singapore and other parts of the world, the fitness community was really excited, and it became a thing because everybody wanted to participate," he notes. These markets were already hosting multi-day events a couple of years ago, a testament to Hyrox’s established appeal.

This burgeoning interest has also fostered a supportive ecosystem around the sport. Rajput points out that gyms and training centers looking to align with Hyrox, either through affiliation or specialized programming, invest annual fees ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹60,000. This signifies the development of structured training environments tailored to the Hyrox format.

Rajput also draws a distinction between participation and competition. "There’s a massive pool of people who are participating, but only a certain pool who are actually competing," he observes. For many, the allure of Hyrox lies less in outright victory and more in the experiential aspect. "People are signing up to try it out, to do it with their partners, with a group of friends, even for the social aspect of it," he says. The desire for visibility and "social clout" also plays a role for some.

The profound sense of shared effort is often the most compelling element. Rajput recounts his experience at the Bangkok Hyrox in March, his sixth race. "What stands out, he says, is how naturally the format brings people together. Whether it’s friends, family members, or even complete strangers on the same course, there is a shared rhythm to the experience." This camaraderie is a defining characteristic: "It’s a lovely event in that sense – people come together, push through it side by side, and that makes the whole thing far more enjoyable."

The Pillars of Hyrox: Training, Nutrition, and Gear

The success of any endurance-based event hinges on a multi-faceted approach, encompassing rigorous training, strategic nutrition, and appropriate gear. Hyrox, with its unique blend of running and functional fitness, demands a comprehensive preparation strategy.

Nutrition: The Unsung Hero of Performance

Bengaluru-based fitness trainer Shwetambari Shetty, who achieved a podium finish in the Women’s Pro Doubles at the inaugural Mumbai event, qualifying her for the World Championships in Sweden, emphasizes the critical role of nutrition. "If training builds the base, she stresses that nutrition and recovery determine how well that training translates on race day," she states. Unlike purely strength-focused disciplines, endurance events like Hyrox necessitate a distinct fuelling strategy.

Central to this strategy is carbohydrate loading. Shetty advises consuming approximately five grams of carbohydrates per kilogram of body weight early in the week, escalating to seven to eight grams per kilogram in the two days preceding the race. The primary objective is to maximize glycogen stores, the body’s primary energy source during prolonged physical exertion.

Race-day fuelling demands equally meticulous planning. Shetty suggests practicing with energy gels during training to gauge individual tolerance and timing. A common approach involves consuming one gel 15 to 20 minutes before the race, followed by smaller doses every 20 to 30 minutes to maintain energy levels. Beyond pure energy, managing fatigue-related issues like cramping is also paramount. Solutions such as salt tablets, electrolyte mixes, or even pickle juice-based concoctions, frequently employed in endurance sports, can offer relief.

The Importance of Apparel and Footwear

Preparation, however, extends beyond diet and physical conditioning. Shwetambari Shetty highlights the often-overlooked impact of apparel. "If you’re carrying gels or snacks, you need functional clothing with pockets," she advises, recalling instances where improper storage led to discomfort and even injury.

The unique demands of Hyrox, straddling the line between running and strength training, have also spurred innovation in footwear. Shreya Sachdev, Puma India’s Head of Marketing and Strategic Initiatives, Footwear, explains the rationale behind their Hyrox-specific iteration within the Nitro line. "There is running, but there’s also multiple forms of functional fitness," she notes. "So regular training shoes don’t work, and typical running shoes aren’t fully optimized either."

Traditional running shoes are engineered for forward motion, prioritizing energy return through cushioning and propulsion. However, Hyrox requires a different set of attributes. "The key difference is stability and grip," Sachdev elaborates. "When you’re doing movements like wall balls, sled pushes or sled pulls, you need a grounded, stable base. You also need traction." Puma’s Hyrox-adapted Nitro models achieve this balance by integrating cushioning with enhanced lateral stability and superior outsole grip, enabling athletes to transition seamlessly between running intervals and strength stations without compromising performance. The current edition, distinct in its pink colorway, is the official Hyrox footwear for the season and is expected to make its debut at the Bengaluru race.

The Hyrox Advantage: Inclusivity and Adaptive Participation

A significant aspect of Hyrox’s growing appeal is its commitment to inclusivity, catering to a diverse range of abilities. Pune-based performance coach Veenita Johnson, a Hyrox-certified trainer and consultant for Hyrox India, is a testament to this principle. Johnson, who lives with bilateral peroneal neuropathy (foot drop), is set to compete in the Adaptive category at the Bengaluru race, having previously participated in the doubles category in Mumbai.

The Adaptive category is specifically designed to accommodate athletes with various physical conditions, allowing for modifications to the standard race format. While Johnson will complete the one-kilometre runs between stations, she may modify certain strength components. For exercises like sled pushes or pulls, which heavily stress the lower limbs, she might opt for a reduced distance, such as 25 meters instead of 50. For movements like wall balls, she has the option of using a plyometric box for added stability. "You can choose whether to take that support or not – it’s flexible depending on your condition," she explains.

Crucially, Hyrox embraces a spectrum of participation within the adaptive category. "If there are too many modifications required, you can choose to participate out of the race, just for the experience," Johnson notes, underscoring the event’s focus on participation and personal achievement.

Despite these accommodations, training for the adaptive category demands intensified effort. Johnson’s regimen includes additional mobility work, physiotherapy-led exercises, and targeted strengthening to compensate for less functional muscle groups. "I have to spend extra hours building endurance and managing compensation patterns," she says, highlighting a recent 10-kilometre run as part of her preparation.

The inclusive nature of Hyrox extends beyond individual participation, fostering a sense of community and shared accomplishment. This inclusivity is also attracting commercial interest, with brands recognizing the unique demographic of Hyrox athletes. For instance, at the Bengaluru edition, The League, a members-only dating app, will host an on-ground activation, capturing athletes’ efforts and reframing traits like consistency and resilience as desirable qualities.

The Pricing Debate: Value and Investment

The cost of participation in Hyrox events has sparked discussions, particularly when compared to traditional road races. Raj Ganpath acknowledges that registration fees, starting around ₹7,500 and potentially exceeding ₹10,000 depending on the category, can appear substantial. Spectator passes also range from ₹500 to ₹1,500.

However, Ganpath argues for a nuanced comparison. "Here, you’re dealing with an indoor, controlled environment – air-conditioning, specialised equipment like sleds and ski ergs, plus judges and timing systems. Naturally, the cost of putting something like this together is much higher," he points out. The logistical complexities and the provision of a high-quality, controlled racing environment contribute significantly to the overall cost.

As India navigates the early stages of Hyrox adoption, Ganpath views the current pricing as reflective of an initial phase. "We’re still at that stage where people are trying it out," he observes. "And like anything new, the first set of participants are usually the ones willing to pay that premium." This suggests that as the market matures and participation grows, pricing strategies may evolve.
