Chennai, India – May 21, 2026 – A vibrant and growing skateboarding community is taking root in Chennai, fostering an inclusive environment for enthusiasts of all skill levels. Spearheaded by passionate individuals like Jacob Dan Paul, the Chennai Skateboarding Community is dedicated to promoting the sport, encouraging participation, and celebrating the unique culture surrounding it. With an upcoming "Greatest Trick Of The Year" (GOTY) Jam on May 24th, the community is poised to showcase its talent and attract further attention to Chennai’s burgeoning skate scene.
The Genesis of an Inclusive Community
Jacob Dan Paul, a skateboarder with a background in dance, understood from his own beginnings in 2016 that learning to skateboard can be an intimidating process. Recognizing the potential for a more welcoming and supportive atmosphere, he co-founded the Chennai Skateboarding Community with a clear mission: to create a space where anyone, regardless of their experience, could embrace the joy of skateboarding.
"Many young people who skateboard tend to take on the pressure that a sense of competition imposes," explains Jacob. "Our group, which meets every Sunday, hopes to be inclusive, practice, have fun, and indulge in a new hobby." This philosophy has resonated with a growing number of Chennai’s youth, transforming a simple desire to connect with fellow skaters into a thriving community.
A Sunday Ritual of Skill and Camaraderie
Every Sunday, the park beneath the Thiruvanmiyur train station becomes a hub of activity for the Chennai Skateboarding Community. Approximately 20 skateboarders, predominantly between the ages of 18 and 25, gather to practice, learn, and push their limits. The demographic is overwhelmingly Gen-Z college students, a testament to the sport’s appeal among this age group. Notably, the community has also seen an encouraging influx of female skaters, who actively reach out to Jacob and express their interest in joining the sessions.

The learning process within the community is largely self-driven, with members frequently consulting YouTube tutorials to refine their techniques. Sundays are dedicated to applying this knowledge, attempting new tricks, and honing existing skills. This collaborative learning environment, devoid of high-pressure competition, allows for organic growth and a shared passion for the sport.
Skateboarding in Chennai: A Nascent but Promising Landscape
Despite the growing enthusiasm, Jacob acknowledges that skateboarding in Chennai is still in its nascent stages compared to more established hubs. He observes a common trajectory where talented student skaters, while representing Tamil Nadu in competitions, often pivot towards conventional career paths, leaving behind the sheer exhilaration of gliding on a skateboard.
Jacob’s own journey exemplifies a different path. His background as a dancer provided him with a natural advantage in understanding balance and movement, allowing him to pick up skateboarding with relative ease. He chose to pursue it as a passion rather than a fleeting hobby, a decision that has yielded significant rewards. Today, he is not only a coach but also a competitor, dedicating himself to skateboarding full-time after years in various retail roles. He is driven by the prospect of nurturing and expanding this "cool culture" within the city.
The "GOTY Jam": A Catalyst for Growth and Recognition
To further propel Chennai’s skateboarding scene, Jacob has collaborated with Sphere Skateboards, a Bengaluru-based brand specializing in skateboarding equipment. This partnership culminates in the highly anticipated "GOTY (Greatest Trick Of The Year) Jam" scheduled for May 24th, commencing at 3 p.m.

"Most people outside of Tamil Nadu do not know about the skateboarding culture here," Jacob states, highlighting the importance of events like the GOTY Jam for visibility. "When I visited Bengaluru in April, we set up a meeting with the Sphere guys who seemed keen on seeing what the scene here is like. We are anticipating around 30 skaters. I have asked other clubs to represent their styles too." This collaborative spirit aims to foster a sense of unity within the broader Indian skateboarding community.
The GOTY Jam promises to be an engaging spectacle, featuring two key skateboarding disciplines. The first is the "ollie," a fundamental trick that, despite its apparent simplicity, requires considerable practice and skill. Jacob emphasizes that mastering the ollie is a significant milestone for any beginner. The second event is the "Game of Skate," a creative trick-off that incorporates elements of chance and playful challenges, reminiscent of rock-paper-scissors but with a skateboarding twist.
Participants can look forward to receiving complimentary t-shirts and browsing an array of stylish merchandise, underscoring the community’s appreciation for individuality and self-expression. In the skateboarding world, style is indeed a significant form of currency.
Looking Towards the Future: Chennai’s Skateboarding Aspirations
While acknowledging Bengaluru’s current standing as the "skateboarding capital" of India, Jacob remains optimistic about Chennai’s potential. His primary focus is on fostering connections and welcoming individuals eager to explore new experiences through skateboarding. He eloquently describes the sport as "among the chillest ways to blow off some steam," capturing its therapeutic and recreational benefits.

The Chennai Skateboarding Community’s commitment to inclusivity, skill development, and community building is laying a strong foundation for the sport’s future in the city. Events like the GOTY Jam are crucial in providing a platform for skaters to showcase their talents, connect with brands, and inspire a new generation of enthusiasts. As Chennai continues to embrace this dynamic urban sport, the echoes of wheels on pavement are set to become an increasingly familiar and celebrated sound.
