Vyasai Thozhargal, coordinated by documentary photographer N Sakthivel, stands as a testament to the power of collective action rooted in shared experiences and a commitment to overcoming adversity.
A Catalyst of Caste Discrimination and the Birth of Purpose:
The genesis of Vyasai Thozhargal lies in the poignant personal experiences of its members, particularly N Sakthivel. He recounts the sting of caste-based discrimination he faced during his higher secondary education in a school in Besant Nagar. "Some students there would not call me by my name and would address me as ‘Vyasarpadi’ instead," Sakthivel shares, highlighting the subtle yet pervasive nature of prejudice. This derogatory label, intended to demean him due to his locality, ignited a fire within him.
Instead of succumbing to despair, Sakthivel channeled his anger and frustration into sports and education, recognizing their transformative potential for self-worth. "I won several trophies for my school," he recalls with a sense of triumph. "Once, they called my name in the assembly to congratulate me. The name ‘Sakthivel’ rang through the campus." This moment, he emphasizes, was a profound realization of how sports and education could elevate an individual’s standing and instill a sense of dignity. Here, under the guidance of dedicated teachers like R Vijayalakshmi, children not only receive academic support but are also instilled with the principles of rational thinking and civic engagement. "Here, one of the more important lessons besides the one in textbooks, is to use the tools that we as citizens have, to ask important questions," Vijayalakshmi explains. The Right to Information (RTI) Act is prominently taught as a powerful instrument for citizens to hold authorities accountable.
The decision to name the tuition center after Dr. Ambedkar is a deliberate and symbolic one. "We named our tuition centre after Ambedkar because of our love for the leader," Sakthivel states, "And also because pagutharivu or rational thinking is crucial for a casteless society." This underscores the movement’s commitment to dismantling the vestiges of caste prejudice and fostering a society based on reason and equality.
Beyond Academics: Relief, Resilience, and Innovation:

Faced with the critical shortage of ambulances, Vyasai Thozhargal pioneered the concept of "auto-rickshaw ambulances." "We welded fittings in autos making them suitable to fit oxygen cylinders, which were in demand during the time," Sakthivel elaborates, showcasing their practical and life-saving solutions.
Young Challenge Sports Club and Social Welfare Association: Four Decades of Empowerment in Thiruvottriyur
For an impressive 40 years, the Young Challenge Sports Club and Social Welfare Association (YCSC) in Thiruvottriyur has been a beacon of hope, utilizing sports as a powerful catalyst for instilling confidence and purpose in the lives of local children. This enduring legacy began with K Chinnasamy, a visionary from the neighborhood who, in his early twenties, founded the club initially as the Lenin Sports Club.
A Shield Against Substance Abuse and a Hub for Growth:
"He wanted to prevent youngsters from getting trapped in the world of substance abuse," explains K N Prabhakaran, the current vice president of the club and nephew of the founder. This initial objective laid the groundwork for YCSC to become a safe and nurturing space for young people.
In its nascent stages, YCSC served as an informal gathering point where school children could engage in games of cricket and football after school hours. This recreational foundation gradually evolved into a more structured educational support system. "It then expanded into a free tuition centre," Prabhakaran notes, recalling how approximately 40 children would convene on his family’s terrace for classes. The growing demand for educational support soon necessitated a larger venue, and a local school generously offered its premises for the tuition classes, a testament to the community’s embrace of the initiative.
Evolution and Continued Impact:
Initially, young boys and girls honed their sporting skills at the Wimco Nagar grounds. Seniors who had successfully navigated their academic and professional journeys would often return to share their experiences and offer guidance on career growth, further inspiring the younger generation. While the evening tuition program has since been discontinued, YCSC remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting children who are passionate about sports. "We meet once a week at a turf that we book for a subsidized cost for football and cricket practice," says the 38-year-old Prabhakaran, highlighting their continued dedication to providing accessible sporting opportunities.
Advocacy and Artistic Flourishing:
A cornerstone of YCSC’s social advocacy is an annual rally held in North Chennai, where participants raise powerful slogans against casteism, fostering a sense of collective consciousness and a commitment to a casteless society. Prabhakaran proudly shares that numerous students who have been part of the club have gone on to achieve remarkable success in diverse professional fields. "We also hold regular discussions on socio-economic issues, without going deep into politics," he adds, emphasizing their focus on practical and relevant community dialogue.
The association also places significant value on the arts, recognizing its role in holistic development. "There are around 10 schools in our neighbourhood and we hold art and literary events every year. For this, we have commissioned a rolling trophy," Prabhakaran mentions. As one of the oldest community-focused organizations in North Chennai, YCSC continues to welcome and nurture children across generations, leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of the community.
Singaravelar Padippagam: Cultivating Environmental Awareness and Educational Resilience in Ennore
Initially established as a tuition center for government school students in Ennore, Singaravelar Padippagam has evolved into a vibrant hub for environmental awareness and educational empowerment. Since its inception in 2015, operating from a modest 600 sq ft hall, the center has become a critical support system for children from working-class families.
Bridging Educational Gaps and Preventing Dropouts:
Devi Hariharan, a key figure at the center, highlights one of their most significant achievements: successfully preventing school dropouts. "This used to be a huge problem for Government schools in our locality since most parents are from the working class and are busy through the day," she explains. The center’s dedicated teachers provide essential academic support from 6 pm to 8 pm daily, ensuring that students receive the attention they need to succeed. "Even class VIII students would find it difficult to read and write," Devi recalls, underscoring the magnitude of the educational challenges. However, with the consistent support from the teachers at Singaravelar Padippagam, many students have now achieved commendable marks in their Board examinations, a testament to the center’s effectiveness.
Fostering Environmental Stewardship and Social Support:
Beyond academics, Singaravelar Padippagam actively cultivates environmental consciousness among its young charges. Regular interactions with prominent activists and environmentalists, including Nityanand Jayaraman, provide students with invaluable insights into ecological issues. "We’ve also had students from IIT Madras interact with our students," Devi adds, highlighting collaborations that broaden the students’ perspectives. As an active member of the Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF), Devi also plays a crucial role in offering emotional support to children from challenging family backgrounds. She shares a heartwarming anecdote of a withdrawn pre-teen who, after enduring years of trauma at home, began to blossom and make friends at the center, illustrating the profound impact of a supportive environment.

Bhagath Singh, one of the founders, points to the center’s engagement with the National Children’s Science Congress as a significant platform for students to undertake impactful projects. A notable project has focused on addressing the severe pollution plaguing the Kosasthalaiyar river, which flows into the sea through Ennore. This initiative demonstrates the center’s commitment to empowering young minds to become active participants in environmental stewardship.
