His subsequent relocation to Bengaluru exposed him further to the burgeoning pickleball communities in India’s metropolitan hubs. This exposure ignited a vision, leading Ajay, alongside his schoolmates Sharath Varghese, Yadu Manoj, and Lawrence Moraira, to establish "Spinz Pickleball" in Pongumoodu. This dedicated space exclusively for the sport has quickly become a focal point for its growing momentum in Thiruvananthapuram.
Ajay’s journey is emblematic of a broader trend. Entrepreneurs across Thiruvananthapuram, inspired by their own introductions to pickleball in Tier 1 cities like Bengaluru and Chennai, are now investing in dedicated facilities. Ajay Thomas explains their approach: "We host daily open plays for people who want to try the sport for the first time. Sunish S Pillai, an employee at Technopark who has been playing for three months, sees pickleball as an ideal team-building exercise. "Currently, everyone playing with me sees it as an opportunity to explore something new and as a stressbuster," he says. Ajay Thomas echoes this sentiment, "Many people see it as an alternate fitness plan. At the same time, it is also a place to bring family members or colleagues together."

"We want to create a group of people who are very excited to play the sport," says Ajay, who has cultivated a WhatsApp community of over 200 members. Ajay notes that the sport is particularly well-suited for individuals leading sedentary lifestyles. Sunish’s experience with his family further illustrates this inclusivity; his six-year-old son, despite limitations in holding the paddle, shows immense enthusiasm, and even his senior colleagues have embraced the sport after a single try.
Looking ahead, "Spinz Pickleball" is planning to introduce women-exclusive matchups, recognizing the growing number of women participating. "Since the court is in a residential area, we have a lot of women coming to the facility. Initially, it was just men, then families, and now women alone have started coming in," Ajay observes. "Everyone might not like cycling or running," Ajay concludes. "But pickleball is not something you do alone; it needs group effort. For a sport like this, you must continue playing and fall in love with it."
